Cambodia Compass report, 5th June - Three workers returning from Thailand were discovered to have the modified B1.617 COVID-19 virus, also known as the "Indian variant," according to the Cambodian Ministry of Health.
The Institut Pasteur du Cambodge has detected the presence of B1.617 COVID-19 in three individuals, all of them are Cambodian workers returning from Thailand, according to a statement from the Ministry of Health dated June 4, 2021.
The affected individuals are:
A 27-year-old female who is being treated at Oddar Meanchey Provincial Hospital.
A 46-year-old male who is being treated at Ek Phnom Hospital, Battambang Province.
A 43-year-old woman who is being treated at Maung Russey Hospital in Battambang Province.
The “Indian variant” is the name given to the B1.617 COVID-19 virus. On October 5, 2020, it was discovered for the first time in Maharashtra, India. Due to the occurrence of mutations E484Q and L452R, it is also known as a "double mutant."
The new BI617 virus, according to the Ministry of Health, is the same as the one detected in six other ASEAN countries — Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam – as well as around the world.
