Compass Cambodia report, July 1st - Cambodia recorded record daily increases in coronavirus deaths and infections on Wednesday, crossing the "red line" in its largest outbreak to date.
On Wednesday, Cambodia reported 27 COVID-19 deaths and 1,130 cases.
Cambodia effectively limited its outbreaks throughout last year, with one of the smallest caseloads in the world, but it has been trying to prevent the spread since late February, when it discovered a highly transmissible strain.
"In terms of COVID-19 virus propagation in the country, we've reached the tipping point. To stop viral transmission today, everyone must work together responsibly" Or Vandine, the secretary of state and spokesman for the health ministry, said in a video call interview with BTV.
"We don't want to cross the red line and have to go into lockdown again," she explained.
The new record numbers brought the total number of cases to 50,385 and the number of deaths to 602.
Cambodia's coronavirus immunisation campaign has made headway, with doses provided to 4.1 million of the 10 million people targeted for vaccination.
