Compass Cambodia report - Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, about 71 percent of the construction work on the Chinese-funded Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville Expressway has been finished, according to the Cambodian Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT).
According to the ministry, MPWT Secretary of State Yit Bunna visited the building site in southeastern Kampong Speu province on Friday to monitor project progress.
The 190-kilometer-long and 24.5-meter-wide expressway's construction began in March 2019. The almost 2 billion US dollar expressway would connect the national capital Phnom Penh to the province of Preah Sihanouk in southwestern Cambodia, which is noted for its deep-sea port, according to the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC).
"It is Cambodia's first-ever expressway project and the country's most vital strategic route," according to the MPWT. "It reduces travel time from Phnom Penh to Preah Sihanouk province's ports from five hours to two hours while also saving transportation costs."
The highway is one of the Belt and Road Initiative projects that Cambodia and China are working on together (BRI). During a visit to the project in June, Nin Saphon, chairwoman of the National Assembly's Commission on Public Works, Industry, Mines, Energy, Commerce, and Land Management, said the expressway was another testament to Cambodia and China's unbreakable ironclad friendship.
The Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville Expressway project, according to Hu Zhaoguang, uses environmentally friendly technologies and aims to establish a "green expressway" for long-term development.
