Phase 4 of the Japanese-funded flood protection upgrade project is nearly complete

Compass Cambodia report, July 7th - The Phnom Penh Flood Protection and Drainage Improvement Project Phase 4 is now over 98 percent complete and ready for the forthcoming rainy season, thanks to Japanese funding.

The majority of the works, including sewer installation, the construction of an underground 65,000 cubic meter water reservoir, and the construction of a new pumping station with a capacity to drain water up to 1.4 cubic meters per second, have been completed, according to the Phnom Penh Department of Public Works and Transport this morning.

When completed, the project will aid in the relief of flooding in the area surrounding and north of Wat Phnom, including Streets 47, 90, and 92.

The fourth automatic waste collecting machine in Phnom Penh's drainage system (automatic screen pit), which is part of this project, was also installed and officially placed into operation in early June.

The project includes the building of underground water storage, a water pumping station, a mechanical waste bin, and water pumping trucks, and is funded by a US$36 million grant from the Japanese government.
