ADB raised US $30 million to improve Cambodia's health system

Compass Cambodia report - The Asian Development Bank (ADB) announced on October 8th that it has chosen to offer Cambodia with a total of $30 million in financial capital support to help the country develop its health system in order to combat COVID-19.

The Greater Mekong Subregion Economic Cooperation Mechanism (GMS) will contribute $25 million to help upgrade the virus examination and laboratory services of 81 provincial and township hospitals in Cambodia, improving the virus monitoring system, virus control, and traceability, according to the circular. The other $5 million financing source is the Japan Poverty Reduction Fund (JFPR), which will be used to urgently improve the infrastructure of 14 Cambodian hospitals, including ambulances, oxygen tanks, oxygen treatment equipment, and human resource training for the treatment of new virus patients.

COVID-19, according to Rikard Elfving, a senior social expert at the Asian Development Bank, had a significant impact on Cambodia's economy, posing a threat to poverty alleviation and talent development. The Cambodian public health system will be reinforced as a result of the above aid programs, allowing it to respond more effectively to COVID-19, minimize the threat and impact on public health and society, and indirectly contribute to poverty alleviation.
