Cambodia Compass report, 19th June - Due to a lack of loading capacity, Zhanjiang, a port in China's Guangdong Province, will temporarily prohibit receiving frozen seafood cargoes from Cambodia and ten other Asian countries.
According to Vietnamese trade representatives in Beijing, the decision by Zhanjiang Port Zhanjiang Port Group Co., Ltd will apply to shipments from Vietnam, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Mongolia from June 20 to July 15, according to the National Agro-Forestry-Fisheries Quality Assurance Department (Nafiqad) under Vietnam's Agriculture Ministry.
The suspension, according to a letter sent on June 11 to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) and Vietnamese seafood companies, is due to the port's cargo-loading capacity, which has been hampered by increased health and safety measures implemented in response to a COVID-19 outbreak in Guangdong. After a meeting with Chinese firms and associations on June 3rd, Zhanjiang Port Zhanjiang Port Group reached the decision.
Vietnamese enterprises should keep in touch with their Chinese counterparts for situational updates, according to Nafiqad.
In a separate step, China's General Administration of Customs has halted imports of frozen seafood from six Indian exporters after coronavirus was allegedly discovered on their packaging. According to India Today, their cargoes will be stopped for a week.
Officials in Guangdong are attempting to stop the spread of the extremely infectious Delta strain, which was initially discovered in India. On June 11, nine new cases were confirmed, increasing the total number of new cases in the province to 128, according to the South China Morning Post.
New instances have only been discovered in places now under lockdown, according to Guangdong Health Commission Deputy Head Xu Qingfeng, who did not rule out the potential of more cases being discovered.
During its ongoing attempts to manage the outbreak, the province has administered over 42 million tests.
