Compass Cambodia report - The value of all importing goods into Cambodia (excluding gold) was US$14.6 billion in the first eight months of 2021, up 26.7 percent from the same period previous year, while the value of building materials imports was up 23.7 percent y-o-y.
The increase in overall import value was due to an increase in textiles, raw materials for garment manufacturing, building materials, fuel, and other items, according to a report from the Ministry of Economy and Finance.
The report also displays that the Covid-19 pandemic has continued to have an impact on the Cambodian economy, particularly the February 20 Community Incident, which has lasted until now and put pressure on key economic growth metrics.
Meanwhile, the construction industry continues to decline, as seen by a fall in approved projects and investment value.
The Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction approved 2,901 construction projects in the first eight months, a 449-project decrease from the same period previous year.
The total investment value of the aforementioned projects was US$3,843 million, a 24.4 percent decrease from the previous year.
