The construction sector in Cambodia is undergoing a remarkable recovery, driven by a significant increase in the volume of iron and steel imports. According to a report by the General Department of Customs and Excise, Cambodia imported steel worth US$631 million, an increase of 69.6 percent in 2023, which was US$372 million.
The same source indicated that “in December, steel imports reached over US$69 million, an increase of 76.9 percent compared to the same period in 2023, when imports exceeded US$39 million.”
The increase in steel imports highlights the gradual recovery of the construction industry.
It is worth noting that most of Cambodia's steel imports come from China, Vietnam, and Thailand. Through these channels, Cambodia has increased trade with many neighboring countries while supporting its own infrastructure and economic development.
Overall, the increase in steel imports is not only a sign of the recovery of Cambodia's construction industry but also a sign of a positive economic outlook for the country.
