Prime Minister Hun Manet reaffirmed the government’s commitment to allocating land to landless citizens, enabling them to sustain their livelihoods while contributing to forest protection.
Speaking on Tuesday, PM Hun Manet announced the implementation of the “Land Granting and Forest Protection for Sustainable Development” programme, which will begin accepting applications from impoverished landless individuals in February 2025.
In a video address lasting over seven minutes, the Prime Minister said that the programme aims to resolve land issues for underprivileged Cambodians without proper land ownership.
Additionally, the initiative seeks to curb illegal encroachments on state land while fostering community participation in forest conservation efforts.
“This initiative serves a dual purpose: first, providing land to truly landless Cambodian citizens, and second, enabling them to participate in protecting the land and forests surrounding their communities,” PM Hun Manet said.
To ensure the programme’s successful execution, the government has established a committee under the Land Management, Urban Planning, and Construction (LMPC) project. The LMPC Secretariat will soon begin notifying citizens through various channels, with official application acceptance starting in February 2025.
It should be mentioned that, during the plenary Cabinet meeting last Friday, the government designated land in O’Sev, Hang Sarat village, Sam Khuoy commune, Sesan district, Stung Treng province, for 1,000 impoverished families.
In the first phase, 500 families will receive land, with each family being allocated a total of three hectares for residential and agricultural purposes. In the next phase, an additional 500 families will be provided with land.
According to the government, the designated O’Sev land spans nearly 10,000 hectares and is adjacent to the site of a social land concession project.
