Phnom Penh Governor Khuong Sreng recently announced the openning of the new pedestrian street (Walkstreet) along the riverside every Saturday and Sunday evening starting from today.
The new walkstreet starts in front of the Cambodia Post Office and stretches to the Royal Palace. Sreng made the announcement during a meeting to review the progress of the project on Wednesday in the presence of representatives from the Ministry of Tourism and officials from Phnom Penh City Hall.
Sreng said that the project will kick off on February 1, 2025. As a first step, the Municipal Administration will open the pedestrian street every Saturday and Sunday evening from 6 pm to 11 pm, attracting greater numbers of national and international tourists to visit Phnom Penh.
He said that City Hall has been planning this pedestrian street since as early as 2019. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the project was suspended.
The government recently instructed the Municipal Administration to restart the project, and the administration has since been planning and promoting the opening of Walkstreet.
According to the Municipal Administraton, when the Walkstreet is open, no vehicles can use the area. It will also make arrangements for toilets and stalls for products on this street to attract visitors.
