Phnom Penh: Sihanoukville Airport has been expanding its landing and flight capacity of receiving more passengers through expansion of its air route and passenger building facilities to reach international standards.
Under Secretary-General of the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation of Cambodia, Soy Sochan said on February 18, he led the Civil Aviation Technical Delegation in cooperation with French company SCA, overseeing the technical aspects of strengthening and expanding the air route of Sihanoukville International Airport along with Samdech Techo Hun Sen, the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia on November 26, 2018, who requires SCA to develop the airport as the 4E airport for inspection and preparation of the master plan for the development of the runway and expansion of the new air route with 4E, which has international standard to receive all types of aircraft.
The airport is located at Thmor Thom Village, Ream Commune, Prey Nop District, Preah Sihanouk Province. Dr. Mao Havannal, Minister for Cambodian Civil Aviation Secretariat, said that at Sihanoukville International Airport is gradually developed to strengthen and expand additional infrastructure such as landing, flight, and passenger terminals to meet the increasing year-over-year flight demand.
The airport previously had a runway of 1,800 meters long and reached a C4 range with a length of 2,500 meters and will continue to extend to 4E with a length of 3,300 meters and 45 meters width that can accommodate large planes, landing and flying.
At Sihanoukville International Airport, there are 11 airline companies flying and landing on a daily basis, which does not include rental flights.
Pich Sophon Dara, head of Increasing Flight Department at Cambodia Airports, said recently that the airport will be expanded and will have the same length of runway and the same size as the current Phnom Penh International Airport and has the capacity to accommodate 10 million passengers a year. At present, the airport has the same size as the Siem Reap International Airport.
“The expansion of the airport is in response to the increasing number of flights and the growth of Cambodia’s aviation industry,” he said.
