Lieutenant General Duch Dane, a deputy director-general yesterday during a meeting with General Kang Sokhorn, GDI director-general said the department will recruit more women next year and also train some to become leaders at the subordinate level.

“To reduce gender inequality, the department has decided to offer chances for more women to participate in decision making and provide them with a convenient working environment,” she said.

The GDI currently has two women deputy director-generals and 18 who head subordinate level branches.

During his speech, Gen Sokhorn noted the government’s efforts to promote gender equality at all levels of society but called for more action to engage women in leadership positions.

He said that the government is aware of the important roles women play in contributing to society and the Kingdom’s economy.

Gen Sokhorn said that ensuring gender equality in all sectors has provided opportunities for women to improve their social status and expand their capacities in both public and private positions.

“As part of the government’s strategic plan, we must continue to empower women by increasing proportionality and strengthening women’s capacities at the national and sub-national level, ministries, institutions, politics and skill level,” he said. “We must also strengthen women’s capacities in leadership positions.”

Gen Sakhorn noted stakeholders should continue improving gender equality in their policies and development plans, adding that women should be encouraged for entrepreneurship through the extension of vocational education and training programmes.

“They must ensure social protection for Cambodian women and families through the promotion of gender equality and collaborate with related parties to prevent women from being exposed to human trafficking and violence,” he said.

During a separate meeting on Monday, Kim Siphat, a Ministry of Women’s Affairs secretary of state, said the government has made significant efforts to ensure that women and men have equal rights to participate in all civil society activities, including giving women more senior positions in decision-making institutions.

“We, the ministry, development partners, civil society, and the private sector who are working on gender equality must continue improving skills and encourage more participation from women,” she noted.

According to a World Economic Forum report, Cambodia has improved its status in the field of gender equality, ranking 89 among 153 countries in 2019, compared to 2018’s 93 out of 149 countries.

Ros Sopheap, executive director of Gender and Development for Cambodia, yesterday said the situation for women has improved but equality is still limited.

“Most women are not employed at the top decision-making level,” she said. “They are only employed at the subordinate level.” Source from Khmertimes.
