Summary:The Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology yesterday announced that the Kingdom will experience heavy rain until August 10, which could cause inundation in provinces prone to flooding.

The Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology yesterday announced that the Kingdom will experience heavy rain until August 10, which could cause inundation in provinces prone to flooding.

It said that most provinces in Cambodia, especially coastal areas, will be affected by rainstorms that could lead to flooding, especially in Koh Kong and Preah Sihanouk provinces and parts of National Road 4 in Preah Sihanouk province.

“Please pay attention and be careful of high speed winds of up to 15 to 20 metres per second, big waves rising up to one to two metres, and flooding that can occur in Koh Kong, Preah Sihanouk provinces and National Road 4 [in Preah Sihanouk],” the announcement said.

Major General Chuon Narin, Preah Sihanouk provincial police chief, on Saturday temporarily banned some water transportations as a safety precaution.

Maj Gen Narin said that he had ordered owners of small tourist boats to temporarily suspend activities.

“We are preparing to pay more attention on sea [transportations],” Maj Gen Narin said.

“We will allow large boats to operate, depending on the situation,” he added, noting that officers will check a boat’s technical system before departure.

He urged the public to comply in order to avoid any accidents.

Preah Sihanouk Provincial Governor Kuoch Chamroeun on Saturday called on all fishermen to temporarily suspend fishing activities between August 3 and 6.

Mr Chamroeun said some areas in the province have experienced flooding and urged all visitors to stay safe.

“Tourists should not go swimming during this period to avoid any incidents,” Mr Chamroeun said.

He noted that Preah Sihanouk province in this period experiences the southwest monsoon, which brings rain and strong winds that may cause flooding, especially along National Road 4.

He also called on the provincial Committee for Disaster Management, Water Resources and Meteorology department and other relevant institutions to disseminate information on the weather.

During a cabinet meeting on Friday last week, Prime Minister Hun Sen called on relevant ministries and institutions to monitor water levels in rivers during the rainy season, which he said can lead to floods.this news from khmertimekh.com
