Local non-profit group Save Nature Cambodia has continued to raise awareness toward protecting nature by spreading the importance of growing trees.

Helmed by founder Sam Dararath, the group has since planted almost one million trees in the Kingdom.

Mr Dararath, who is also an advisor to Prime Minister Hun Sen, said he noticed an increasing number of Cambodians who are keen to participate in initiatives involving the environment.

“Since inception, we have managed to raise awareness and planted trees in a lot of public areas such as schools, hospitals, temples and national parks,” he told reporters at a recent tree-planting event. “It is refreshing to see more and more people volunteering to help with our initiatives.”

“We are honoured to have worked and we will continue to work closely with the government, and both local and international NGOs to protect the environment,” he added.

At the auspicious ceremony, Save Nature Cambodia chairman Mok Mareth also expressed his gratitude to all donors who made the event possible and pleaded for the public to show continuous support toward all eco-friendly efforts.

“You cannot protect the environment unless you empower people and you help them understand that these resources are their own, that they must protect them, then only can we protect our environment and save our beautiful nature,” the former Minister of Environment said.

“Let us join hands and be the saviours of our wonderful nature and environment,” he added.

Meanwhile, Tourism Advisor Mohan Gunti, who also sits on Save Nature Cambodia’s advisory board, highlighted how nature-friendly initiatives could add positive values to the tourism industry.

He added that green efforts would ensure a responsible practice of travelling when it comes to natural areas, thus preserving cultural features that promote conservation.

“This will ensure a low-visitor impact and provide for beneficially active socio-economic involvement of local people. Ecotourism holds enormous promise for conservation of wildlife and wildlands, as well as the communities that live nearby and even those abroad,” he said.

“Allowing people to explore new places in a way that positively impacts the natural environment through education, economic opportunity, and conservation creates a constructive experience for everyone involved,” he added. Source from Khmertimes.
