The Phnom Penh Municipal Administration will launch the Walkstreet along the riverbank, from the Post Office of Cambodia to the Royal Palace, by the end of January 2025. It is a project aimed at promoting tourism in the form of a street with shops and various entertainment centers.
At a meeting to review the progress of the Walkstreet project, attended by representatives from the Ministries of Tourism, Cambodia Posts, and Electricity of Cambodia, on the afternoon of December 25, 2024, His Excellency Khuong Sreng, Governor of Phnom Penh, said that the walkstreet project has been in existence for a long time, since 2019, but was suspended for a while due to the COVID-19 crisis, while the Royal Government has instructed to work hard to implement this project in order to attract tourists, ease traffic congestion, and enhance the beauty of Phnom Penh.
His Excellency Khuong Sreng said that after the Royal Government's instructions to encourage tourists to visit their respective localities, the Phnom Penh Municipal Administration has decided to promote the resumption of the walk street in order to attract more national and international tourists to visit.
In addition, he stated that in order for this project to run smoothly, the first step is to open the walk street every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evening by announcing the closure of all types of vehicle traffic, preparing parking lots and toilets, decorating with lights, and organizing the sales and trading order on this street well, which ensures that this project will run smoothly and receive support from the citizens.
Please note that the Phnom Penh Walkstreet project is divided into three areas. The first zone is more than 3 hectares in front of the post office, extending from Baksei Chamkrong Road to Sisowath Quay to Road 106 and Road 13. The second zone is more than 20 hectares, extending from Road 106 to Road 154 in front of Wat Ounalom. The third area is more than 30 hectares, extending from the riverside park, the park in front of Wat Botumvatey pagoda, to Samdech Techo Hun Sen Park, while the third zone is open to normal traffic, except in the 1st Zone and 2nd Zone, where vehicles are not allowed to travel.
