"174-km Canal Project Accelerates: Cambodia Builds 'Golden Waterway' to Spur Economic Growth"

According to Cambodian media reports, the "Techo-Funan Canal," a national key infrastructure project in Cambodia, is progressing steadily as planned. The Ministry of Public Works and Transport recently stated that the project will establish an independent and sustainable water transport system for Cambodia, achieve modernization of national transportation, and hold milestone significance.  

It is reported that the first phase—including boundary surveying, stake installation, and route mapping—has been fully completed. An inter-ministerial coordination team is conducting land acquisition compensation negotiations in accordance with laws to ensure the project’s legal compliance.  

Spanning over 174 kilometers, the canal connects Kandal, Takeo, Kampot, and Kep provinces, with a navigation capacity for two-way passage of vessels up to 3,000 DWT. It is designed to integrate domestic waterways with international ports, enhancing the nation’s maritime independence, safety, and efficiency.  

Upon completion, the canal is expected to significantly boost Cambodia’s water transport capacity, reduce logistics costs, and drive coordinated upgrades in water management, agriculture, tourism, trade, and urban development. It is projected to deliver substantial economic and social benefits to regions along its route.
