Prime Minister Hun Sen intends to turn all railways in Cambodia into high-speed railways in the future. This was stated by Samdech Techo during the graduation ceremony for technical teachers and students at the National Technical Training Institute on February 27, 2023.
Concerned about the desire to turn all the country's railways into high-speed rail, Samdech Techo also expressed concern that “soon Cambodia will leave a low-middle-income country to become a high-speed country.” “High-middle-income countries, this will be related to the interest rates that Cambodia borrows, which will have higher interest rates.”
“When we leave the least developed countries, they will no longer lend us money on the principle of concessions, but they will lend us at interest rates on the principle of trade, so this trading principle is higher than before” he said. “Then Cambodia will lose access to favourable interest rates from development organizations.”
Samdech raised this concern because it is related to the development of infrastructure, especially the development of old railways, the same concession interest is profitable.
It should be noted that according to the Ministry of Public Works, Cambodia currently has three railways, including 1. Southwest Railway (Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville) with a total length of 266 km. Phnom Penh Railway Station – Phnom Penh International Airport has a total length of 10 km and 3. The northwestern railway (Phnom Penh-Poipet) has a total length of 386 km.
