The construction of the 50C road connecting Kompong Chhnang province to Kompong Thom province is set to open in 2024, while the longest bridge in Cambodia, 3 300 meters long, will also begin construction at the same time, according to H.E. Sun Chanthol, Senior Minister, Minister of Public Works and Transport, spoke in a press interview on 09 March 2023.

“We have recently submitted a letter to prime minister Hun Sen, asking for funding from the Chinese government to make sure the project of 50C road could be started in 2024. PM has agreed on the actual road option with a length of 58 km, including 3,300 meters long bridge which will be one of the longest bridges in Cambodia,” H.E. senior minister said.

According to H.E. Sun Chanthol, the 50C road project connects Kampong Leng district of Kampong Chhnang province to Stung Sen city of Kampong Thom province, with a length of 58 km under a US$150 million budget, while another 3,300 meters long bridge is going to be built using US$100 million.

It should be mentioned that the Cambodian government is going to request a total budget from the Chinese government, and there are 100 drains and five bridges for the 50C road project.

This project was announced once by PM Hun Sen during River Festival in Kampong Chhnang province in 2019.

H.E. minister added that a company called SAWAC Consultants has studied in detail. As a result, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, the project has found no impact on the environment.

Meanwhile, H.E. Sun Sovanrith, Governor of Kampong Chhnang Province, stated that this project provides a lot of benefits to the people in the province by not only reducing travelling time and fees but also helping to promote trade between Cambodia-Vietnam.
