The important National Road 33 in Cambodia is undergoing rehabilitation, and its completion is getting closer. By October 27, 2023, almost 40 percent of the complex project—which aims to improve the quality of this vital transit artery—had been completed. This remarkable accomplishment highlights the government's dedication to making sure the road is prepared for the coming Sea Festival.
A recent site visit by the Secretary of State of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, H.E. Pal Chandara, was accompanied by a Guangzhou Wang An Technical Advisory Company representative, a technical working group from China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), and provided an opportunity to assess progress.
The project has made remarkable progress, having already reached important milestones:
- Road Widening: Approximately 52.57 kilometers of the road have been cleared and widened to accommodate the growing traffic demands.
- Sub-grade Work: An impressive 49.87 kilometers of sub-grade work have been successfully executed, ensuring a solid foundation for the road.
- Sub-Base Paving: The sub-base has been paved over 37.66 kilometers, enhancing the road’s structural integrity.
Upholding on-site safety has been underlined by H.E. Pal Chandara, Secretary of State. To make it easier for transporting people and goods, precautions include having warning signs and traffic diversion signs in conspicuous locations and enough safety equipment. Prioritizing the local community's welfare is especially important as preparations for the upcoming Sea Festival get closer.
The project aims to rehabilitate National Road 33 and has been granted over $61 million in funding. The People's Republic of China's government provided a concessional loan for this project, which is supplemented by contributions from the Royal Government of Cambodia designated for impact and tax mitigation.
