Recently, the Inter-Ministerial Commission of the Funan Techo Canal Navigation Project held a meeting under the chairmanship of H.E. Sun Chanthol, Deputy Prime Minister, First Vice President of the Council for the Development of Cambodia, and Chairman of the Committee with the participation of His Excellency Lok Chumteav, who are the leaders and other relevant officials.
The navigation road project was approved by the Royal Government of the 6th legislature at the plenary session of the Council of Ministers on May 19, 2023, and was named the "Funan Techo Canal" project. Recognizing the benefits of the project for the promotion of the national economy, the Royal Government of the 7th legislature has provided full support to expedite the implementation of this project.
In fact, on October 17, 2023, the Royal Government of Cambodia signed an agreement to allow Chinese companies to study more details on this project before reaching negotiations for the construction agreement, which is the final stage.
The Framework Agreement Signing Ceremony was signed between Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol and representatives of the China Bridge and Road Corporation (CRBC) under the presidency of Samdach Thipadei Hun Manet, Prime Minister of Cambodia.
Samdach Thipadei Hun Manet, Cambodia Prime Minister, said that the "Funan Techo Canal," a project that connects the sea to the river, is expected to increase the ability to transport from the provinces along the Tonle Sap and Mekong River to the sea faster after the project is completed, and the economy of the people along the river will grow.
Please be reminded that according to the previous study, this Funan Techo canal project is 180 kilometers long from the Takeo canal of the Mekong River, through the Ta Ek canal of the Tonle Bassac river, into the Ta Hing canal of the Tonle Bassac river in Koh Thom district, and continues to the sea in Kep province, passing through four provinces including Kandal, Takeo, Kampot, and Kep, with a total population of 1.6 million people living on either side of this waterway.
