Another new special economic zone will appear in Koh Kong province, as need 300 hectares of land

The Green Special Economic Zone project will appear in Koh Kong province in early 2024, as it requires a site area of 300 hectares or more to be developed. This is according to a recent publication from the Koh Kong Provincial Department of Information.

According to the above source, on December 19, 2023, the project was also convened under the coordination of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Council for the Development of Cambodia, in collaboration with the Government of the United Kingdom through the British Embassy in Cambodia, with the participation of Lok Chumteav Mithona Phuthong, Governor of Koh Kong Province, the Council for the Development of Cambodia, representatives of ministries, professional institutions, and leaders of relevant departments in the province.

Based on the Council for the Development of Cambodia, the Green SEZ project is to establish a green export hub for international markets in order to encourage Cambodia to seize new opportunities in the global green supply chain to attract large foreign investors and support the diversification of the national economy. The importance of green components is the use of renewable energy, sustainable waste management, and environmental considerations in key sectors, including electronics and textiles.

The investment capital is about 400 to 800 US dollars invested in the Public-Private Partnership Module in the form of a joint venture between the government and private partners. The meeting discussed the review and evaluation of several preliminary project locations, such as:

- Infrastructure project connecting Koh Kong province, National Road 48, National Road 10, coastal road connecting National Road 48.

- Renewable energy projects, Tatai Leu and Stung Meteuk hydropower projects, as well as other projects including international ports, deep sea ports, and international airports.

As confirmed in the meeting, the basis for selecting Koh Kong province for the project is that Koh Kong province has more than 300 hectares of vacant land, which is suitable for long-term development and creates attractive investment opportunities for private partners.

On that occasion, the CDC proposed to the Koh Kong Provincial Administration some priority points, including:

1. By providing a choice of potential locations, select a 300-hectare site with adequate infrastructure and avoid nature reserves.

2. Arranging site inspections with the Embassy of the United Kingdom and the CDC in January 2024.

3. Choice of investment on land, such as land lease, sale of land, or land allocation for investment by the Royal Government.

4. Request the Koh Kong Provincial Administration to continue to provide coordination and cooperation to promote the development of this project for the achievement of Koh Kong Province and for Cambodia.
