Cambodia is currently studying the construction of three more bridges, while one of them is more than 3 kilometer, located in Kampong Chhnang province in the National Road 50C project. When completed, the bridge will be named the longest bridge in Cambodia.
This according to Prime Minister Hun Manet at the groundbreaking ceremony for the bridge across the Bassac River on February 19, 2024.
Prime Minister stressed that roads, infrastructure is the second most important factor after people, while a strong country needs people with good knowledge to develop the country. As the number of bridges continues to grow, Cambodia is also studying the construction of additional bridges, including the longest bridge in the country.
He said that just counting the major bridges across the river so far, there are a total of 25, of which 19 bridges have been built, 3 bridges are under construction and 3 bridges are under study. And these 25 bridges cross the Sekong River, Upper and Lower Mekong River, the Tonle Sap, the Bassac River and some other areas.
He continued that currently, people living in Prek Aeng area who want to go to Chak Angre Krom, you have to go through Monivong Bridge or Prek Samrong Bridge. For people in Kampong Chhnang want to go to Kampong Thom, they can go through the Prek Kdam Bridge, or take a detour to Siem Reap, or take a ferry, but if the weather is bad, it is difficult to use the ferry.
"The development work is not over yet! Now we are not only building bridges on the water, but also on land. There are many flyovers in Phnom Penh, and in the future we will probably build a city ring bridge. Bridges and roads are not only factors that promote the economy, but also reflect local development conditions.” He added.
It should be mention that there are currently 7 cross-river bridges in Phnom Penh, including: Cambodia-Japan Friendship Bridge (Chroy Changvar), Cambodia-China Friendship Bridge (Chroy Changvar), Monivong Chbar Ampov Bridge (Ⅰ), Prek Pnov Bridge, Monivong Chbar Ampov Bridge (Ⅱ), Russey Keo bridge and Koh Pich-Koh Norea Bridge.
