Cambodia-Singapore Strengthens to Expand Cooperation in Some Sectors

On the afternoon of March 5, 2024, Samdech Moha Bovor Thipadei Hun Manet, Prime Minister of Cambodia, and His Excellency Lee Hsien Loong, Prime Minister of Singapore, met on the occasion of attending the ASEAN-Australia Special Summit 2024 in Melbourne, Australia.

This is the second meeting between the two leaders after the first at the 43rd ASEAN Summit in Jakarta, Indonesia, in September 2023.

The two leaders also discussed cooperation in key areas such as politics, trade and economy, tourism, energy security, and defense and security.

They also exchanged views on the promotion of cooperation through high-level exchanges of visits, connectivity, people-to-people relations, and so on.

In the political sector, the two leaders noted the importance and benefits of reorganizing political consultations and agreed to push for a second round of political consultations between Cambodia and Singapore in the future.

For trade and economy, the two leaders agreed to promote better relations by encouraging cooperation between relevant ministries and institutions of the two countries for initiatives and specific actions.

The two leaders also agreed to boost defense and security cooperation, which contributes to the fight against cybercrime, online gambling, etc.

Regarding energy security, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet informed his Singaporean counterpart that during the recent meeting on February 27 with the Prime Minister of Malaysia, the Malaysian side agreed and supported the submarine power transmission project (Laos-Cambodia-Singapore) across the Malaysian seabed.

Regarding cooperation in the field of tourism, the Prime Minister informed the Prime Minister of Singapore that Cambodia has recently launched Visit Siem Reap 2024, the launch of Siem Reap Angkor International Airport, and the establishment of a mechanism to promote the tourism sector in Cambodia with the participation of the private sector. The Samdech Thipadei informed the Prime Minister of Singapore that the two countries should further enhance cooperation by creating more diverse and attractive tourism products, facilitating and expanding direct flights between the two countries, and enhancing the relationship between the private sectors of the two countries to explore new potentials of tourism between the two countries.
