The navigation route project (Funan Techo Canal) has been approved by the Royal Government to rehabilitate and dig from the Tonle Bassac River to connect the sea of Kep Province over a distance of about 180 kilometers. It requires the digging of a new road to connect Prek Takeo of the Mekong River to Prek Ta Hing of the Tonle Bassac River and to the sea in Kep Province.
According to the Comprehensive Master Plan on Cambodia Intermodal Transport and Logistics System 2023-2033, the project is to build three navigation canals located on Prek Takeo in Kien Svay District, Kandal Province; Krong Svay Daun Keo, Takeo Province; and Damnak Chang Aeur District, Kep Province. The project also plans to build two strategic ports in Takeo provincial town and Damnak Chang Aeur district, Kep province, which are logistics hubs and multi-modal transportation hubs. There are also four other satellite ports that are in Kampong Trach district, Angkor Chey district, Angkor Borei district, and S'ang district, which serve as an auxiliary port and a warehouse for the storage and distribution of goods in the area around the port.
The project also plans to build two main roads on either side of the waterway and a number of bridges along this waterway from Kien Svay district to the sea in Kep province.
For this historic waterway project, it is licensed to be invested in and built by the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) under the BOT (Build-Operate-Transfer) model. According to H.E. Peng Ponea, the Funan Techo Canal project is scheduled to open in the fourth quarter of 2024. Recently, H.E. Sun Chanthol, Deputy Prime Minister and First Vice Chairman of the Council for the Development of Cambodia, said that the project is expected to open construction sites in June or July this year.
On March 20, H.E. Peng Ponea also met with a delegation from China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) led by Mr. Gao Xin, Deputy General Director of the Company in Cambodia, to accelerate the implementation of the "Funan Techo Canal" project.
