Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has unveiled a study project for a railway from Siem Reap city to the Kyung Yu Road to Siem Reap Angkor International Airport, approximately 13 kilometers long, to further facilitate travel for citizens and tourists.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony for students of the Royal University of Phnom Penh on Thursday morning, November 21, 2024, Samdech Maha Bovor Thipadei Hun Manet stated, "I allow the relevant team to study another rail line. The first is the railway line from the airport to the Siem Reap city, but also need studying another short rail line to connect from Kyung Yu Road, which has just been newly built, only 13 kilometers from the existing internal road, from where the road intersects Banteay Srei, about 13 kilometers to the Chinese airport.
For the Prime Minister, this railway will further facilitate the travel of citizens and tourists to and from Siem Reap Airport and will also contribute to helping Cambodia become more competitive, resilient, and flexible.
In addition, he also mentioned the expansion of National Road No. 6 and the project to build the Phnom Penh-Siem Reap-Poipet expressway in the near future to expand people's travel options.
Regarding the Phnom Penh-Siem Reap-Poipet expressway project, the Royal Government of Cambodia has authorized the Chinese company, CRBC, to invest in construction. The company has currently completed its studies and is preparing a summary of the evaluation to submit to the Royal Government.
The Phnom Penh-Siem Reap-Poipet Expressway project, approximately 420 kilometers long, starts in the north (Win-Win Boulevard) of Phnom Penh and ends in Poipet city, Banteay Meanchey Province (Cambodia-Thailand border). Construction will be divided into two phases, with Phase 1, Phnom Penh-Siem Reap, 249 kilometers long, planned to cost approximately US$2.5 billion. Phase 2, Siem Reap-Poipet, 151 kilometers long, is planned to cost approximately US$1.7 billion.
