From 2000 to July 2024, the number of tall buildings with a height of five storeys up in Cambodia has increased to more than 2,857 buildings, according to a report by the Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning, and Construction.
The report said that from 2000 to July 2024, the royal government of Cambodia issued construction permits for approximately 66,978 projects nationwide, equivalent to a total construction floor area of 194,310,196 square meters and an estimated total investment value of approximately US$77.7 billion.
For buildings with a height of 5 storeys and above, there are a total of 2,857 buildings, with 1,813 buildings in Phnom Penh, 730 buildings in Sihanoukville Province, 249 buildings in Banteay Meanchey Province, and 65 buildings in other provinces.
If we divided, there are 1,652 buildings with a height of 5-9 storeys, 743 buildings with a height of 10-19 storeys, 250 buildings with a height of 20-29 storeys, 152 buildings with a height of 30-39 storeys, and 60 buildings with a height of 40 storeys up.
Lok Oknha Sam Sok Noeun, President of the Global Real Estate Association and Chairman of the Board of Directors of SAM SN GROUP, said that the growth of high-rise buildings over the past 10 years is due to several factors, such as the growing demand for accommodation by foreigners who come to invest and work in Cambodia (Cambodian law allows foreigners to buy and own from the first floor above), the growth of the population living in cities, traffic congestion, the growth of individual and family incomes, and the trend of changing the mindset of Cambodians towards high-rise building living.
He stated that condos, apartments, offices, shopping malls, and commercial buildings occupy the majority of Cambodia's tall buildings.
He claimed that the construction sector in Sihanoukville province will be revitalized in the future as the government has successively launched new strategies to transform Sihanoukville province into a multi-purpose province for investment in all sectors.
Regarding the current high-rise buildings, he also stated that Poipet City (the border between Banteay Meanchey Province and Thailand) is showing significant positive signs.
