Phnom Penh has 453 new housing complexes and 1,877 high-rise buildings

In 2024, Phnom Penh witnessed the construction of 453 new housing complexes, 1,877 high-rise buildings (five stories or more), and 18 new factories, raising the total number of factories in the city to 811. This according to the Phnom Penh Governor Khuong Sreng said during the opening of the annual performance review of the Phnom Penh capital administration on Tuesday.

Governor Khuong Sreng also announced that the Phnom Penh Municipality successfully provided over 101,700 public services through its One Window Service Office (OWSO) in 2024. This amounts to an average of 273 services daily, generating a total revenue of 48.39 billion Riel (approximately $12 million). 

He added that 270 complaints and requests from citizens were addressed and resolved, highlighting the administration’s dedication to meeting public demands. Additionally, the number of national and international visitors to Phnom Penh’s various attractions exceeded 11 million, marking a significant 63% increase compared to 2023.

The meeting also highlighted key challenges and objectives for the coming year, discussions included:

1-strengthening the management of the education sector, particularly in preschool, primary, and non-formal education.

2-Improving the oversight of private healthcare services and eliminating illegal practices.

3-Focussed on regulating public space commerce, particularly street vendors.

4-Ensuring the safety of high-rise buildings and ongoing construction projects.

5-Measures were proposed to tackle plastic waste disposal in drainage systems, canals, and pumping stations, with the implementation of fines for improper waste disposal.

6-Maintaining public safety through crime prevention, the crackdown on illegal gambling, and effective management of migrants was underscored.

Sreng reaffirmed the Phnom Penh Municipality’s commitment to addressing the challenges of a growing and modernising Phnom Penh, ensuring that public services continue to meet the needs of its citizens while supporting sustainable development.
