New expressway connecting the new airport with the city center has been postponed

Compass Cambodia report, July 5th - Due to the COVID-19 situation, development of a new expressway connecting Phnom Penh city center and the new Phnom Penh International Airport in Kandal province may not begin this year as scheduled. According to a spokesman for the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SSCA), the idea is still on the table, and the feasibility assessment is ongoing.

The expressway would be built as a flyover with a total length of 21 kilometers, separated into two phases, according to OCIC Chairman Neak Oknha Pung Kheav Se, who announced late last year that phase 1 of the project will be begun this year. “The first phase is around 10 kilometers long and runs from the Kbal Thnal intersection to NR2, passing via Hun Sen Blvd and Street 271. Meanwhile, the second phase, which runs from NR2 to the new Phnom Penh Airport, is around 11 kilometers long, according to Neak Oknha Pung.

However, SSCA spokesman HE Sin Chansereyvutha indicated on July 2nd, that due to the pandemic, the project may be postponed.

The entire project will cost over $400 million and will be completed shortly after the new airport is completed, which is projected to be sometime after 2023.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Public Works and Transport recently announced plans to build a train connecting Phnom Penh city center to the new Phnom Penh airport, which will help to ease traffic once the airport is completed in 2023.
