Compass Cambodia report -  The Minister of Public Works and Transport, Sun Chanthol, recently stated on Facebook Live at a panel discussion titled "Electrification of Vehicles for a Cleaner Cambodia" that the government will increase the use of electric vehicles by the reason of wanting to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

"In Cambodia, EV is the initial level," Chanthol explained. "In Cambodia, about one million vehicles, automobiles and trucks are registered. Yet so far, the country has only 42 electric vehicles. That is a small number compared to the normal number of vehicles.

He also stated that people must realize the importance of using clean energy for EVs, the right manner of exposing the recycling of EV batteries, and the government will also being support for EVs through import taxes.

As for now, the EV import tax is roughly half, at just about 63% compared to 122% of the conventional car import tax, he said, adding that the special tax on EVs is just 10% compared to 50% of the normal vehicle special tax.

"We do assist the EV industry." We collaborate with relevant organizations to develop strategies, determine how we can further promote this EV, and establish standards. We don't want Cambodia to be a dumping site for accepting ten-year batteries. We want property batteries. We also need property policies that allow us to not only bring in EVs, but also recycle and expose the batteries. All of this is also not just the responsibility of EDC or the Cambodian government to construct charging stations. The private sector should collaborate with us or invest in charging infrastructure, "he added.

It is worth mentioning that the panel discussion, which included Keo Rottanak, Director-General of Electricité du Cambodge (EDC), Pablo Kang, Australian Ambassador to Cambodia, and Tina Redshaw, British Ambassador to Cambodia, also addressed the significance of electrification of transportation in Cambodia's future.
