Compass Cambodia report - On Monday, the publicly listed Phnom Penh Autonomous Port (PPAP) opened its new container terminal, bringing its total capacity for container handling to 400,000 TEUs per year. Sun Chanthol, Senior Minister and Minister of Public Works and Transport, presided over the opening.
According to Hey Bavy, Director General of Phnom Penh Autonomous Port, development on the US$18.4 million container terminal began in 2019 and would be completed in mid-2021. The port is spread out over 2.75 hectares. He added that the funding for the investment expanding container terminal comes from the PPAP's savings and the issuance of securities, and that it is capable of handling 100,000 TEUs of containers per year. Since 2012, the PPAP has completed the first and second phases of the LM17 container terminal extension project, raising the terminal's handling capacity to 300,000 TEUs per year.
"The quantity of containers handled at the port has increased dramatically, therefore we need to create additional infrastructure to manage the port's further growth," Bavy added. The PPAP handled 290,000 containers in 2019.
According to Hey Bavy, the PPAP is also planning a new container terminal extension project that will increase its capacity to 500,000 TEUs per year. The project is scheduled to begin in the year 2022.
The PPAP has set a goal of improving the handling capacity to 900,000 TEUs per year due to the continued growth of container traffic.
