In the past, the Royal Government decided to build the 180-kilometer Funan Techo Canal project, starting from the Prek Takeo Canal on the Mekong River, passing through the Prek Ta Ek canal of the Tonle Bassac River, then entering the Prek Ta Hing canal of the Tonle Bassac River, Koh Thom district, and continuing to the sea in Kep Province, passing through four provinces, including Kandal, Takeo, Kampot, and Kep. The project is expected to open in 2024.
However, according to the Comprehensive Master Plan on Cambodia’s Transit and Logistics System 2023-2033, the Royal Government also plans to study and restore the Mekong River waterway from the Phnom Penh Autonomous Port to the Cambodian-Vietnamese border. The waterway project to be restored is 102 kilometers long and has a water depth of 7.5 meters. The project is estimated to cost about $160 million and is in long-term development.
In addition, the restoration and improvement of the Mekong River waterway from the Phnom Penh Autonomous Port to the Cambodia-Vietnam border will help increase the existing water transport capacity from 3,000 tons (in the dry season) up to 5,000 tons, which is also a type of sea vessel.
