Vasim Sorya, ministry spokesman, said that they are in talks with the Ministry of Economy and Finance over funding for the project.
“The port will be funded by the state, so the Ministry of Public Works and Transport and the Ministry of Economy and Finance are discussing the budget,” Mr Sorya said.
He said the project is needed to cope with the rising number of local and international tourists to the province.
A tourist seaport is now under construction in neighbouring Kampot province, while Sihanoukville also on the coast, boasts the country’s only deep seaport.
He said Kep’s port will be smaller than Kampot’s, and cheaper to build.
Kampot’s port will serve as a gateway to seaports in Vietnam and Thailand for tourists, according to Sorya. It is being built with an $18 million loan from the Asian Development Bank. It is scheduled to be operational by the end of the year.This news from khmertimeskh.com
