$76 mln ring road ‘breaks new ground’

The 43 kilometre road “broke ground” on Saturday under the presence of Minister
of Public Works and Transport Sun Chanthol and is being built by the China Road & Bridge Corp Co Ltd, with construction expected to take 28 months to complete.

The road will ease serious traffic congestion caused by the high number of container trucks that use Sihanoukville city as a main thoroughfare between the port and the national highway, according to the ministry’s spokesman Vasim Sorya. “Because the amount of trucks has increased [from Sihanoukville deep-sea port] the ring road will now provide an important link to efficiently transport goods and move the current bottleneck away from the city centre of Sihanoukville,” Vasim said. “The development of the ring road will also boost the economic activities in Stung Hav district, which is home to a number of private ports such as petroleum warehouses and special economic zones,” he added. 

The ring road will also be connected to the country’s first expressway linking the country’s capital city Phnom Penh and its only deep seaport in Sihanoukville that will stretch more than 190 km, have four lanes for the majority of its run and is due for completion in 2023 with a budget at almost $2 billion. Once construction is complete, the ring road will be named Samdech Preah Sangreach Tep Vong. Source from Khmertimes.
