Second digital tech expo to be held in March

Digital Cambodia 2020 will be held in March to improve the Kingdom’s human resources in the tech sector.

The second iteration of the expo on digital technologies will be held under the theme “digital talent”.

Speaking at a press conference yesterday, Khan Channmeta, secretary of state at the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications, said Digital Cambodia 2020 will run from March 20 to 23.

The event will help build capacity in research and development in the telecommunications and ICT sector, Mr Channmeta noted.

“The event will encourage the youth to focus on digital technologies that can help Cambodia become a digital economy,” he said, noting that the country aims to become a digital economy by 2025.

Aun Pornmoniroth, the Minister of Economy and Finance, will preside over the opening of the expo.

The three-day event will feature 170 booths displaying ICT services and products. 30,000 visitors are expected to attend.

“We will also invite experts and technology ministers from across Asean. The goal is that members of the private sector can have one-on-one conversations with ministers and network with other companies,” Mr Channmeta said.

The first iteration of the expo was held on March 15-16, bringing together more than 100 tech companies from Cambodia and the region.

In October, the government formed an inter-ministry committee to work on compiling a draft for its policy on the digital economy and digital government.

According to the Telecommunication Regulator of Cambodia, in 2018 Cambodia had 19.5 million mobile subscribers from six different operators. Of these, 13.6 million used the Internet from their mobile phones and about 7 million had Facebook accounts.

Digital Cambodia 2020 will be held at Phnom Penh’s Koh Pich Convention Hall with the support of the ministries of Economy and Finance, Posts and Telecommunications, Industry and Handicrafts, Commerce, Education, Labor and Vocational Training, as well as the CBRD Fund.
