Cambodia Compass report, 29th May - The COVID outbreak at Kandal Provincial Prison has already reached 298 cases. On May 25th, the outbreak was initially recorded. Mr. Chhem Savuth, Director General of the General Department of Prisons, stated on May 26th that COVID-19 infection among inmates and prison officials “...are not widespread and can be controlled. Currently, we are doing more research, there is no problem, we can stop this.”
However, the number of cases has nearly tripled from the initial report of 106. The proportion of employees to convicts in the case total is not immediately known.
Doctors from the Kandal Provincial Health Department are caring for the inmates, while police officers are stationed throughout the facility.
Earlier, there were fears of a repeat of the recent outbreaks in Thai jails, where thousands of Thai inmates are said to have contracted the deadly virus.
