Summary:The leaders made their appeal ahead of the G7 summit, which will bring together the leaders of the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Canada, and Japan on Friday in England.

[Compass Real Estate Platform - June 07] LONDON : One hundred former presidents, prime ministers, and foreign ministers have urged the G7 affluent countries to fund global coronavirus vaccinations to help prevent the virus from evolving and resurfacing as a global menace.

The leaders made their appeal ahead of the G7 summit, which begins on Friday in England and will bring together the leaders of the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Canada, and Japan. Former world leaders wrote to the G7, claiming that global cooperation had failed in 2020, but that 2021 may usher in a new era.

"Support from the G7 and G20 for vaccines that are easily accessible to low- and middle-income nations is not an act of charity, but rather in every country's strategic interest," the letter stated.

Former British Prime Ministers Gordon Brown and Tony Blair, former UN Secretary General Ban-Ki Moon, and 15 former African presidents were among the signatories.

They suggested the G7 and other leaders invited to the summit should commit to spending around $30 billion per year for the next two years to combat the pandemic internationally.

"The G7's payment is not charity; it is self-defense to prevent the illness from spreading, evolving, and threatening all of us," Brown added. "A small price to pay for the best insurance policy in the world," he continued in a statement, "costing just 30 pence (US$0.43) per person every week in the UK."

Their appeal coincided with a poll conducted by the Save the Children charity, which revealed widespread popular support in the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Canada for the G7 to contribute to the $66 billion needed globally for COVID-19 vaccines.

According to the research, 79 percent of Britons support such a strategy, while 79 percent of Americans support it. France had the lowest level of support, with only 63% in favor.
