Compass Cambodia report, August 25 - According to Tourism Minister HE Thong Khon during the site inspection on August 23, the government has decided to host the 40th ASEAN Tourism Forum in Sihanoukville in 2022, and has also vowed to continue upgrading and improving the province's infrastructure system.
The 40th ASEAN Tourism Forum is scheduled to take place at the Sokha Hotel in Sihanoukville from January 16 to 22, 2022, although it will be on a smaller scale than the previous one, with strict health and safety measures in place.
HE Thong Khon added that Sihanoukville was chosen because of the well-connected infrastructure in city, which was recently finished, particularly the international airport, which supports many direct flights.
Aside from hosting the 40th ASEAN Tourism Forum, the government's master plan to transform SHV into a multi-purpose special economic zone, similar to China's Shenzen, includes ongoing infrastructural construction.
Prime Minister Hun Sen established an inter-ministerial technical group in June to expedite work. In addition, the Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning, and Construction has decided to form a new technical working group to reorganize land use and release a new land-use policy in Sihanoukville, which is part of the government's master plan.
To date, the government has completed a number of infrastructure development projects in support of this master plan. These include, among other things, the construction of 34 and 11 roads, the expansion of ports and airports, and the construction of three wastewater treatment plants.
