Cambodia-Korea Friendship Bridge project to open construction site next year

On June 6, 2024, H.E. Park Jung-wook, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to the Kingdom of Cambodia, paid a courtesy call and discussed some work with Samdech Techo Hun Sen, President of the Senate of the Kingdom of Cambodia, including the Cambodia-South Korea Friendship Bridge Project, which will open construction in 2025.

During the meeting, the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea thanked Samdech Techo Hun Sen for his leadership in the development of Cambodia for more than 30 years, and he also believed that as President of the Senate, Samdech Techo will continue to lead Cambodia to achieve further socio-economic development.

H.E. Park Jung-wook also highlighted the growth of South Korean investment in Cambodia as well as the growth of bilateral trade through the Cambodia-South Korea Free Trade Agreement and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).

He said that the Joint Committee of the Cambodia-South Korea Free Trade Agreement successfully held its first meeting and reviewed a number of projects, including the Cambodia-South Korea Friendship Bridge project proposed by Samdech Techo Hun Sen in 2022.

According to the H.E. Ambassador, the preparations for the Cambodia-South Korea Friendship Bridge project are now going smoothly, and the groundbreaking ceremony will begin in 2025.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen has revealed that he plans to visit South Korea in September 2024 to attend the World Knowledge Forum in Seoul and receive an honorary doctorate from the Dongguk University Wise. Samdech Techo also hopes to meet with the President of South Korea, his "Old Friend".

In this regard, the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea promised in front of Samdech Techo that he would make efforts to arrange meetings between Samdech Techo and Korean leaders and dignitaries during this period.

At the same time, Samdech Techo Hun Sen thanked South Korea for its assistance and support in areas of infrastructure such as road construction, human resource training, and recruitment of Cambodian workers in South Korea. Samdech Techo stated that he will witness first-hand the construction of the Cambodia-Korea Friendship Bridge, which he proposed in the near future.

Please be informed that the project to build the Cambodia-Korea Friendship Bridge has two lines: the first line connects in front of the night market across the Tonle Sap to Chroy Changvar, and the second line connects Chroy Changvar across the Mekong River to the Akrey Ksat area. The construction project received a loan from Korea of more than 245 million dollars and was signed on December 9, 2022.
