Cambodia's Ministry of Land Planning and Construction recently released a report showing that the construction industry has become an important pillar industry to promote national economic development. Every day, the construction industry provides 220,000 jobs throughout Cambodia.

At present, among the four pillars of Cambodia's economy, agriculture, garment making, tourism and construction, the construction industry is growing fastest. According to data provided by the Ministry of Land Planning and Construction of Cambodia, the total investment in construction industry has increased by more than 100% in the past five years, from $2.773 billion in 2013 to $6.699 billion in 2017. Up to now, the Ministry has approved 2541 construction projects, with a construction area of more than 10.79 million square meters and an investment of more than 4.8 billion US dollars.

The development of Cambodian construction industry can be seen from the increasing number of high-rise buildings in Phnom Penh, Sihanouk Port and other cities. Previously, including Phnom Penh, residential buildings and other buildings are mostly low-rise buildings, but now more and more high-rise buildings in Phnom Penh, high-rise office buildings and apartments have become fashionable. According to data from the Ministry of Land Planning and Construction of Cambodia, 92 new buildings with more than five floors were built in the first nine months of this year.

In 2015 ,the construction and real estate industry for the fist time jumped into the first pillar industry to promote Cambodia's economic development. The following factors promote the development of Cambodia construction industry :

Cambodia's political stability and sustained economic growth over the years have promoted sustainble economic and social development and provided a good environment for the prosperity of the construction industry. In Phnom Penh ansd other big cities ,there are more and large shopping malls and office buildings .Schools, institutions and ministry buildings are also expanding in scale.

With the development of economy ,the middle and high-income population in cities is increasing ,and they have higher requirements for living conditions. The rapid development of cities has also attracted from all over the world to seek development in big cities ,and housing just needs to increase. In addition, with the repid development of economic sectors such as garment making ,processing and manfacturing , more Cambodians moved from rural areas to urban areas and increased housing demand.According to a research report, in 2014 ,the population of Phnom Penh and other provincial and metropolitan cities totaled 4.5 million ,accounting for 27.1% of the national population. By 2030, the urban population of Cambodia will increase to 800,000 dwellings will be needed.

Cambodia's high degree of openness to foreign investment is also one of the reasons for the prosperity of the construction industry. Cambodia's sustained economic growth and relaxed policies have attracted sustained growth in foreign investment. According to incomplete statistics, there are more than 400,000 foreigners living in Cambodia. Most of these foreigners live in Phnom Penh, which has also led to the development of the real estate industry. In addition, in May 2010, the Cambodian Parliament passed the Aliens Ownership Act, which allows foreigners to buy property in Cambodia and attracts some shrewd foreign investors to lay out the Cambodian real estate market. From 2000 to 2018, foreigners invested 327 projects in Cambodia's construction industry, covering an area of 1.4 million square meters, with an investment of up to $4.892 billion, said Laudersiha, Vice-Minister of Land Planning and Construction of Cambodia.

Of all foreign investment, China, Korea, Japan, Thailand and Singapore ranked the top five. Kampuchea has a good relationship with ASEAN countries and China, and Kampuchea will link up its own development strategy with China's "one belt and one road initiative" and vigorously carry out infrastructure construction, so that investors are very optimistic about Kampuchea's future development prospects. The development of Phnom Penh into an international metropolis, the increasing number and improvement of hotels and tourist facilities in Siem Reap, where Angkor Wat is a world-class tourist resort, and the development and construction of the Sihanouk Special Economic Zone and other special economic zones will bring vitality to Cambodia's construction industry.
