Sihanoukville Deep-Water Port Terminal Expansion Postponed to 2022

Compass Cambodia report, September 8 - According to SHV Autonomous Port Deputy Director General Thay Rithy, Sihanoukville deep-water port terminal phase 1 expansion of the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port (PAS), which was first scheduled to begin construction this year, is rescheduled to begin its construction in mid-2022 as the design is yet to be completed.

The project is to expand the depth of the port by 14.5 meters and length to 350 meters, which will be implemented by the $218 million from the Japanese Fund's Official Development Assistance (ODA). The Sihanoukville seaport expansion project has a total of 5 phases in accordance with the 2020-2030 plan.

After completing the first phase of the project by 2025, large container vessels of up to 60,000 tons, or 93 percent of the Asia-Pacific region's total number of vessels will be accommodated. Meanwhile, the Government of Cambodia offers development partners the opportunity to study both the second and third phases, expanding the depth to 16 meters and 17.50 meters respectively. JICA also studies these phases, according to the HE Sun Chanthol. In the fourth and fifth stages, the government will also extend the port to 18.5 meters and 19 meters.
