Cambodia Compass report, 2nd June - Huawei Technologies unveiled its Harmony smartphone operating system on Wednesday, hoping to recover from U.S. sanctions that have hampered the company's handset business.
Huawei will begin rolling out HarmonyOS on a limited number of smartphone models, giving users the option to upgrade from the current Android-based operating system.
The corporation will no longer be entirely reliant on Android thanks to the deployment of HarmonyOS. Sanctions imposed by the United States prevented Alphabet Inc.'s Google from providing technical assistance for new Huawei phone models, as well as access to Google Mobile Services, the collection of developer services that most Android apps are built on.
Rather than being a direct replacement, Huawei touts HarmonyOS as a "Internet-of-Things" platform capable of running on and linking various devices such as laptops, wearables, automobiles, and household appliances. During a video launch from the business's headquarters in Shenzhen, the business introduced several new HarmonyOS products, including a tablet, a smart watch, and a pen.
The presentation concluded with a preview for Huawei's flagship P50 phone, whose spring release has been delayed "for reasons that everyone is aware of," according to Richard Yu, the company's Consumer Business Group's CEO.
By the end of the year, Huawei hopes to have HarmonyOS installed on 200 million smartphones and 100 million third-party smart devices, according to Wang Chenglu, head of Huawei Consumer Business Group's software department, who has spearheaded Huawei's HarmonyOS efforts since 2016. Wang had spoken at a media roundtable the day before, but his remarks were kept under wraps until Wednesday.
Although a business news release stated that two earlier high-end models would be re-released, the presentation did not include any new cellphones. According to Yu, the business is considering providing upgrades for specific components, such as batteries, for users with older phones. With HarmonyOS, Wang claimed the business was aiming beyond smartphones. He claimed that the smartphone market had reached a plateau and that smartphones remained the most popular gadget in people's lives, owing to the fact that most developers had few other platforms to work with. Other smartphone makers are welcome to adopt HarmonyOS, according to Wang, but Huawei sees enormous prospects in collaborating with non-smartphone device producers.
